About RSS Feeds
What is an RSS feed?
An RSS feed (or news feed) is a web file that allows you to subscribe to a website and automatically receive updates on the site via a piece of sofware called a news reader (or news aggregator). RSS feeds are useful because they save you the time you would usually spend visiting your favourite websites to check for updates.
What is a news reader?
A news reader is a piece of software that displays, in one place, all the news feeds from the various websites to which you are subscribed.
How do I choose a news reader?
There are various types of new reader and most are available for free. The news reader you choose will depend, to a large extent, on how to wish to receive your news feeds. Some new readers download feeds to your computer desktop, email inbox or browser, whereas others are web-based which allow you to view your news feeds online from anywhere. Popular news readers include:
Browsers with built-in news readers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 & 8
Mozilla Firefox 2 & 3
Web-based news readers:
Bloglines
Google Reader - a web-based news reader, ideal for people with a Google account such as Google Mail.
iGoogle - a personalised homepage with a built-in news reader.
NewsGator Online
MyYahoo! - a personalised homepage with a built-in news reader.
Desktop-based news readers:
Feedreader
Newsgator FeedDemon
Microsoft Outlook 2007 - includes a news reader.
More news readers are available from www.download.com.
How do I subscribe to RSS feeds?
Once you have chosen your news reader you can then subscribe to a feed. This varies slightly between news readers but usually you will need to copy the URL (web address) of the feed and paste it into the news reader. Click on our RSS feed below and copy and paste the URL into your news reader.
