Reptiles of REGUA
Many of the 39 species of reptiles recorded to date at REGUA were first identified by Eduardo Rubiao and his team of Biology and Veterinary Science students from the University Serra dos Órgãos in Teresopolis between 2002 to 2004, but their work has been supplemented by the records of three visiting biologists Vitor Borges, Mauricio Almeida-Gomes and Carla da Costa Siqueira.
Apart from the House Geckos the most frequently encountered reptile is the Broad-snouted Caiman which can be seen on most days at both the new and the original wetlands that have been re-created at REGUA. It appears that there are at least 12 individuals in the new wetlands, but there is no evidence of successful breeding yet. The origins of these caiman is a bit of a mystery as the nearest other suitable wetlands are some considerable distance away.
