Amphibians of REGUA

The work of three visiting biologists Vitor Borges, Mauricio Almeida-Gomes and Carla da Costa Siqueira from the Rio State and Rio Federal Universities in 2007 has already greatly improved our knowledge of the amphibians present at REGUA (see below), and further work is planned by a team from the University of Grande Rio led by Professor Luis Weber. We now have a list of 47 identified species but further work is planned to create a comprehensive catalogue of the species present and their altitudinal preferences.

Although the Atlantic Rainforest is considered a biodiversity hotspot, there is still a general lack of data on the ecology of animals and plants that is necessary in order to develop plans for their management and conservation. In the case of amphibians, most studies have been on taxonomy and behaviour but few have been on their required habitat and ecological limits. The RJ Atlantic Rainforest is home to 16 species of amphibians on the threatened list and projects are being undertaken at REGUA to try to answer such important questions as to their required habitats and the effect of forest fragmentation.
